DIY Shivas HaMinim Hanging Buckets

By WhimsDecor

Seven rope-wrapped buckets hang in a row under a leafy pergola, each filled with one of the Seven Species labeled in Hebrew.

A Beautiful Handmade Sukkah Decoration Inspired by the Seven Species

Some Sukkah decorations are beautiful. Others tell a story.

This DIY does both.

Inspired by the Shivas HaMinim, these hanging buckets create a warm, meaningful display that feels both elegant and welcoming. Wrapped in natural cotton rope and filled with lifelike botanicals, they're a stunning way to bring texture, tradition, and handcrafted beauty into your Sukkah.

Whether you hang them individually from the schach or transform them into a statement macramé wall hanging, this is a project you'll look forward to displaying year after year.

What You'll Need:

Supplies:

  • 7 small galvanized metal buckets (approximately 4.7")

  • Cotton rope (3/16"–1/4")

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Floral foam

  • Preserved moss (optional)

  • Artificial Seven Species:

    • Wheat

    • Barley

    • Grapevine (or grape cluster)

    • Fig

    • Pomegranate

    • Olive branch with olives

    • Date palm or dates

  • Wooden tags or cardstock

  • Black paint marker, Cricut vinyl, or printable labels

  • Hole punch

  • Jute twine

Optional Supplies

For Hanging from the Schach

  • Jute rope

For the Macramé Version

  • 7 mini macramé plant hangers

  • Wooden dowel (36–48 inches)

  • Cotton rope

  • Command hooks or zip ties

Step 1: Wrap the Buckets

Start by securing the end of your cotton rope to the bottom edge of the bucket with hot glue.

Wrap the rope tightly around the bucket, applying glue every few inches until the entire exterior is covered.

The natural cotton instantly transforms inexpensive galvanized buckets into beautiful, designer-inspired décor.

Repeat for all seven buckets.

Step 2: Fill the Buckets

Cut floral foam to fit snugly inside each bucket.

If you'd like a cleaner finished look, cover the foam with preserved moss before inserting your stems.

Place one artificial arrangement into each bucket so it extends several inches above the rim.

Arrange them in this traditional order:

  1. Wheat

  2. Barley

  3. Grapevine

  4. Fig

  5. Pomegranate

  6. Olive

  7. Date

Step 3: Label Each Species

Create small wooden or cardstock tags with the Hebrew names of each species.

Tie one tag to the front of every bucket using jute twine.

Hebrew Labels

  • חיטה

  • שעורה

  • גפן

  • תאנה

  • רימון

  • זית

  • תמר

These labels add a meaningful educational element while keeping the display clean, elegant, and cohesive.

Display Option One

Hang Them from the Schach

Attach a piece of jute rope to each bucket handle.

Hang each bucket individually from the schach, spacing them evenly across your sukkah.

For a more custom, designer-inspired appearance, stagger the heights slightly by about 2 to 3 inches instead of hanging every bucket at the exact same level. The variation creates movement and allows each of the Seven Species to stand out beautifully.

Complete the display by weaving warm white fairy lights between the buckets for a magical evening glow.

Display Option Two

Create a Macramé Wall Hanging

Prefer not to hang décor from the schach?

Transform the buckets into a stunning statement wall display.

Place each finished bucket inside a mini macramé plant hanger.

Evenly space the seven hangers along a wooden dowel, securing each one with sturdy knots.

Tie cotton rope to both ends of the dowel and hang it from your sukkah wall or frame using removable hooks or zip ties.

Finish the display with greenery, olive branches, eucalyptus, or warm white fairy lights for an elegant focal point that complements any sukkah style.

Why We Love This DIY

One of the best parts of this project is how versatile it is.

The neutral palette works beautifully with almost any sukkah theme, whether your style is rustic, modern, farmhouse, or boho.

The handmade details give each bucket its own character while creating one cohesive display.

Because everything is artificial, you'll be able to enjoy this decoration year after year without worrying about replacing wilted stems or fruit.

More than just décor, it's a meaningful way to celebrate the Seven Species while creating a timeless tradition your family will look forward to displaying every Sukkos.
