Supplies

How to Make It
Step 1: Prepare the Herb Butter
In a bowl, combine the softened butter, rosemary, thyme, garlic (if using), a pinch of flaky sea salt, and black pepper.
Mix until everything is evenly incorporated.
Step 2: Create the Candle
Place the wick in the center of the ramekin.
Use two skewers or chopsticks across the top of the ramekin to hold the wick upright.
Spoon the butter into the ramekin, pressing gently to remove any air pockets.
Smooth the top with the back of a spoon.
Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely firm.
Step 3: Light the Butter Candle
Before serving, trim the wick to about ¼ inch.
Light the wick and let the candle burn for 10 to 15 minutes. This creates a pool of warm melted butter while keeping the rest of the butter firm.
Blow out the flame before serving.
Your guests can now dip fresh pieces of sourdough into the warm herb butter.
How to Style Your Board
Place the sourdough loaf slightly off-center on a large wooden serving board.
Position the butter candle beside the loaf so it's the focal point.
Add a small ceramic bowl of olive oil nearby.
Scatter roasted garlic cloves around the board.
Tuck sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme between the bread and ramekin for a natural, effortless look.
Finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a few edible flowers for a soft, elegant touch.
Keep the styling loose rather than perfectly arranged. A slightly imperfect board feels warm, inviting, and professionally styled.
Serving Tips
Slice the sourdough just before serving, leaving part of the loaf intact for a rustic presentation.
Serve while the bread is still warm, so the butter melts beautifully into each slice.
If the butter begins to firm up during the meal, simply relight the wick for a few minutes to soften it again, then extinguish the flame before serving.
WhimsDecor Tip: Choose a handcrafted ceramic ramekin in a neutral tone instead of a plain white one. The natural texture adds warmth and complements the rustic look of the sourdough, creating a centerpiece that feels curated, elegant, and effortlessly beautiful.
