The Stained Glass Makeover: Three Trays, One Easy DIY
Looks expensive. Costs less. And no actual glass cutting required.
You know those gorgeous stained glass pieces that make you stop scrolling? The ones that look like they belong in a designer boutique, with a price tag to match?
Well, we're borrowing the look. Not the price tag.
With a plain tray, decorative stained glass film, and a little patience, you can turn three everyday essentials into pieces that look completely custom.
We're making a challah board, a coffee station tray, and a vanity organizer.
Three different looks. One simple technique. And absolutely no artistic talent required. You're welcome.

What You'll Need
The basics are the same for all three projects.
A clear tray or glass board
The three tray options:
Challah Board: A flat 16" x 12" tempered glass cutting board with raised feet, paired with pink magnolia stained glass film.

Coffee Station: A clear acrylic serving tray with gold handles, paired with white floral stained glass film.

Vanity Tray: A clear acrylic scalloped tray, paired with iridescent mosaic stained glass film.

Choose adhesive film confirmed compatible with your tray material. Some window films are designed only for glass, and static-cling versions may not adhere to acrylic.
Let's Get Started
Step 1. Pick Your Pattern
This is the fun part.
Choose your film based on where you'll use your tray.
For the challah board, we chose soft pink magnolias against an iridescent background. For the coffee station, delicate white flowers with hints of green and gold. And for the vanity, a pastel mosaic with just enough shimmer to make your perfume feel expensive.
Not that perfume needs any encouragement.
Step 2. Prep Your Tray
Clean the surface thoroughly and dry it with a lint-free cloth.
Dust, fingerprints, and tiny particles can show through transparent film, so give this step a little attention.
Step 3. Measure Twice. Cut Once.
Measure the flat surface you're covering.
Cut your film slightly larger than needed if the manufacturer's instructions recommend trimming after application.
For the challah board, we're decorating the underside of the glass so the original glass surface stays exposed.
For the acrylic trays, we'll apply the film to the underside of the base and, if the material allows, the outside walls.
Step 4. Apply the Film
Peel away the backing and carefully position your film.
Start at one edge and work slowly across the surface, smoothing as you go with your felt-edge squeegee.
Follow your film's application directions. Some adhesive films require a light water mist, while others must be applied dry.
Work out any trapped air bubbles.
A little patience here saves you from spending the next twenty minutes arguing with a piece of plastic.
Step 5. Finish the Edges
Trim excess film carefully on a cutting mat without scratching the tray.
For trays with straight sides, you can add matching film to the outside walls. This gives the coffee tray that beautiful, all-around stained glass look.
For scalloped or curved trays, the simplest approach is to decorate the flat base only. Applying film neatly around curved edges takes extra work and may not suit every film.
Let the adhesive settle according to the manufacturer's directions before styling.
And just like that, your plain tray has officially upgraded its social status.
Three Ways to Style Your New Tray
1. The Challah Board
Because even the challah deserves a little luxury.
We chose a flat glass board with a gorgeous pink magnolia pattern.
The stained glass design adds color and detail without overwhelming your Shabbos table.
Finish the look with a simple white challah cover embroidered with שבת.
For direct food contact, keep the decorative film completely underneath the glass, with no exposed film on the serving surface. Confirm that your board is suitable for food use.
The result? A challah board that looks like you ordered it custom.
We won't tell anyone how easy it was.
2. The Coffee Station
Your coffee deserves better than a cluttered corner.
For this version, we used a clear acrylic tray with gold handles and a delicate white floral pattern.
Now for the styling.
Add:
Arrange your taller items toward the back and smaller accessories toward the front.
Keep the colors coordinated and leave a little breathing room.
Suddenly, your everyday coffee setup looks like something from a boutique hotel.
Same coffee. Much better presentation.
3. The Vanity Tray
Making your morning routine look a little more glamorous.
This might be our prettiest transformation.
We paired a clear scalloped acrylic tray with a soft iridescent mosaic pattern.
To style it, add:
A pretty holder for makeup brushes
The trick is to keep the accessories simple so the stained glass pattern can shine.
Your perfume collection now has its own little showroom.
Whether your morning routine is five minutes or fifty, at least the counter looks fabulous.
A Few WhimsDecor Tips
Keep the pattern visible. The whole point is to show off your beautiful new design. Don't cover every inch with accessories.
Choose coordinating colors. Let your tray set the color palette for everything you place on it.
Protect the finish. Keep decorative film away from direct food contact, excessive heat, and standing water. Clean according to the film and tray manufacturers' instructions.
Test before committing. Apply a small piece of film to an inconspicuous area first, especially when working with acrylic.
The Final Reveal
Three plain trays. Three completely different looks.
And the best part? You can change the entire style simply by choosing a different pattern.
Florals, geometric designs, iridescent mosaics, or classic stained glass. The possibilities are endless.
So before you spend designer prices on your next decorative tray, try giving an ordinary one a makeover.
Your home gets the upgrade.
Your budget gets to relax.
And you get to casually say, "Oh, that? I made it."
