Spotted After Dark

A little leopard. A lot of drama. All dressed up for the evening.

Who says dinner parties have to stick to traditional colors?

Meet Spotted After Dark; a layout built on rich black velvet, warm amber glassware, and chocolate brown accents. It’s equal parts sophisticated and a little daring.

The stars of the show are the tortoiseshell glasses and custom 12-inch leopard-print pillar candles; personalized with an elegant black script initial (available to order through Elegant Embers). Leopard print is used sparingly here; there’s a fine line between a statement piece and an accidental safari.

Textured black scalloped plates, chocolate velvet napkins tied with delicate leopard ribbon, and sleek gold flatware complete each place setting. Down the center, natural moss balls, woven rattan spheres, and soft touches of eucalyptus balance out the darker tones. Amber glass hurricanes cast a warm glow, while the initialed candles tie the centerpiece together with a luxurious, personal touch.

Black Velvet Tablecloth

Black Velvet Tablecloth

The foundation of the entire design. Start with a floor-length black velvet tablecloth. The soft texture creates a rich backdrop for the amber glassware and warm brown accents. Keep the fabric smooth but let it fall naturally over the edges. Velvet does most of the decorating for you. Styling tip: A lint roller is your new best friend. Black velvet has a special talent for collecting things you didn't know existed.

Black Ceramic Dinner Plate

Black Ceramic Dinner Plate

One plate. Plenty of personality. Skip the traditional stacks of dinnerware and use a single textured black scalloped plate at each setting. The irregular edges add dimension, while the matte finish contrasts with the soft velvet tablecloth. Styling tip: These plates look especially beautiful when paired with warm metallic flatware. No extra chargers necessary.

Chocolate Brown Napkins

Chocolate Brown Napkins

A little softness goes a long way. Choose rich chocolate brown napkins to break up the black and introduce warmth. Gather each napkin loosely in the center, secure it with ribbon, and position it diagonally across the plate. Repeat the exact placement at every seat for a coordinated look. Styling tip: Don't fold them into perfect rectangles. The relaxed, gathered shape is part of the appeal.

Leopard Velvet Ribbon

Leopard Velvet Ribbon

The smallest detail with the biggest attitude. Instead of traditional napkin rings, cut narrow strips of leopard-print ribbon and tie them around the center of each gathered napkin. Let the ribbon ends hang naturally over the plate. This little detail connects the place settings to the leopard candles without overwhelming the design. Styling tip: Use the same ribbon width and length at every setting.

Tortoise Shell Highball Glass Set of 4

Tortoise Shell Highball Glass Set of 4

The inspiration behind the entire table. These amber and black patterned glasses bring warmth, movement, and just the right amount of drama. Place one at each setting, slightly above the knife. Their rich coloring ties together the black velvet, brown napkins, and leopard accents. Styling tip: Keep the rest of your glassware simple. These glasses don't need competition.

Gold Flatware Set

Gold Flatware Set

A little shine to balance the darker tones. Choose sleek gold flatware with a simple silhouette. The warm metallic finish complements the amber glasses and adds contrast against the black tablecloth. Styling tip: Avoid heavily embellished handles. The table already has plenty of texture.

Black Metal Candle Holders

Black Metal Candle Holders

Let the candles take center stage. Use simple matte black pillar holders in varying heights. The dark finish blends into the tablecloth, allowing the leopard pattern to stand out. Styling tip: Mix holder heights while keeping the candle design consistent. This creates interest without making the centerpiece feel busy.

Amber Glass Hurricane Flameless Candle Holders

Amber Glass Hurricane Flameless Candle Holders

Because the table needed a little glow. Scatter amber glass hurricanes between the custom pillar candles. Choose a mix of medium and smaller sizes, with ivory flameless candles inside for a warm glow. The amber glass picks up the coloring of the tortoiseshell drinking glasses and softens the black table setting. Styling tip: Space these between the leopard candles rather than lining everything up in a straight row.

Moss Balls + Wicker Rattan Balls

Moss Balls + Wicker Rattan Balls

A little nature. A lot of texture. Scatter these moss and rattan balls along the centerpiece, mixing sizes around the candleholders. The green softens the black velvet, while the rattan ties in beautifully with the warm brown accents. Styling tip: Keep the arrangement loose and natural. Perfect symmetry is overrated!

Eucalyptus Stems

Eucalyptus Stems

The finishing touch. Tuck small eucalyptus stems between the moss and rattan balls. Keep the greenery low and loose, allowing the candles to remain the focal point. You want a continuous centerpiece that feels full without looking crowded. Styling tip: Use greenery sparingly. The moss and rattan should still be visible.
